Trace of the Golden Horn
Competition Project, 1st Mention
This project is an architectural and urban design proposal aiming to revitalize the historically and symbolically significant Haliç (Golden Horn) shoreline in Istanbul. The Golden Horn has been a witness to various ways of life and cultural layers throughout history, holding a deep-rooted place in the city's memory. In this project, the historical and natural features of the Golden Horn are harmonized with contemporary needs and societal dynamics to create an environment that enhances the quality of urban life and promotes sustainability.
The proposed project seeks to offer functional spaces that cater to new societal requirements while preserving the beauty and cultural fabric of the Golden Horn's coast. To achieve this, different thematic focal points are identified along the coast. These include the Cable Car Transfer Center, Eyüp State Hospital Park, Golden Horn Cultural Hub, Open-Air Gallery, New Recreational Plane, and İGDAŞ Nature Park. These spaces are designed to accommodate various activities such as sports, recreation, cultural events, arts, and relaxation.
Urban design strategies aim to conserve the historical fabric of the Golden Horn while enriching it with new functions. Existing structures and landscape elements are delicately addressed, proposing solutions that are in harmony with the urban texture. The concept of the "trail" created along the coastline transforms public spaces into a connecting context that supports various activities. Additionally, it serves as a backbone regulating user circulation at points where the tramline divides the area.
Landscape design targets environmental sustainability by combining ecological and aesthetic values. The phytoremediation approach aims to revitalize the Alibeyköy Stream and purify the water, supported by wetlands and natural vegetation. This approach intends to maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
The project also focuses on circulation and accessibility. Pedestrian pathways, bicycle lanes, and public transportation stops facilitate easy transportation for people. Parking areas allow visitors to conveniently park while exploring the project. All these elements collectively create an environment where individuals from various segments of society can easily access the project area.
In conclusion, this architectural and urban design project presents an approach that preserves the historical, cultural, and natural values of the Golden Horn while creating sustainable, interactive, and diverse spaces that respond to modern needs. Representing an understanding that bridges Istanbul's rich past with its future, the project aims to enhance the quality of life and societal interactions for the residents while maintaining a strong connection to the city's heritage.
